In his series of three sonatas Op. 33 Wölfl explored the extended range of the newly developed piano by the manufacturer Broadwood. The charming sonatas originated during his most successful period, the London years. A contemporary lexicon mentions 1807 as the year of their genesis. With their delicate structure and overall transparency the sonatas still do not fail to display moments of virtuosity. The fact that Wölfl in his time was considered the best piano teacher in London, does not limit the use of the sonatas to the study room. Their extraordinary beauty makes them just as precious as concert pieces.
