A masterpiece for cello and piano, this sonata in a traditional four movement setting was dedicated to Ries childhood cello tutor, the prominent virtuoso Bernhard Romberg. Remaining in the classical idiom, the work nevertheless exploits the dawning spirit of romanticism and recalls the bravura influence of Ries other teacher Beethoven, with sublime accompaniment at the piano which occasionally erupts into the kind of explosive display which came to characterise Ries style of playing.
