A composer of over 2000 works, this symphony newly restored from the original manuscript, was completed in 1817 during Neukomms five year stay in Rio de Janeiro and reflects something of the magical landscape of Brazil in its musical forms. The third movement contains a quote from Handels Judas Maccabeus, See the conquering hero comes, better known today as the hymn Thine be the glory, and was probably intended to commemorate the return from exile and the ascension to the throne of the Portuguese sovereign, John VI.
